What is the object of the game of lawn bowls? To win. To win by placing your shots closer to the jack than the opponent(s). For social players, the object is also to have fun, get some exercise, and get to know your neighbors. For the competitive bowler, the object is to practice and improve and train for important matches. The Laguna Woods Lawn Bowling club hosts games for both social and competitive bowlers and hosts a monthly event. The Club provides all equipment needed to lawn bowl including extension arms. One of the difficulties of any lawn bowler is to become efficient in length. Short bowls (bowls landing short of the jack, the target for lawn bowls) are not useful. It’s considered better to over-run the jack. Why? Short bowls are considered encumbrances; they seldom get knocked up; they prevent the skip driving into position; and they are generally considered handicap to a skip.

The annual Knockout Tournament and lunch will be Saturday, March 23. Knockout is played with three players who compete against each other. The match-ups are assigned by blind draw according to skill level so, for example, if you usually play lead you'll be competing against two other leads. The tournament is lots of fun for all skill levels. New bowlers must have played in at least three club games to participate. There's still plenty of time to get your three-game experience. A sign-up sheet is posted at the clubhouse.

Did you know that each lawn bowler on a team has specific duties?
A “lead” centers and sets the mat, rolls and centers the jack, and rakes the bowls.
The second bowler on a team, the “vice,” measures and signals the score, records the score, chalks touchers, and signals information about the rink to the skip.
The “skip” is the team leader. The skip bowls last, is good at making a variety of shots, and sets the tenor for good sportsmanship.
